Learning begins when you graduate from a government school.
Being lazy should stop then too.
I read lots of blogs and listen to many podcasts. These keep me productive, informed, and some just entertain. Do you spend at least 30 minutes daily bettering yourself? Do you spend one minute daily bettering yourself? If you do not, the law of devolution (see the Second Law of Thermodynamics) is biting at your heel. You’re getting worse daily.
Note: For confused Public School Physics teachers, we simply cannot reduce the confusion you’re experiencing right now. Your Education degree ruined you of your ability to understand matters of real science such as thermodynamics, entropy, or creationism.
Some of My Heroes are Lazy or Stupid
I find that more and more people who communicate for a living are sloppy with their writing and speaking.
Did you catch that? I’m talking now only about people who communicate for a living!
Too many blogs and podcasts today are sloppy in their writing and speaking. They toss out strings of words that sort of sound okay only to thugs in street gangs. Sometimes we all take literary license and slide words around to make specific points. I’m not talking about that.
What shocks me is how the Number One Job of blog writers is to communicate their message and yet “communication” is the very element they do worst of all.
Note: I’m well aware that a typo or two often creeps into this blog. In most (all?) cases, I hope it’s obvious from the surrounding proper grammar usage and spelling that it was simply a typo. I correct them as soon as I see them or somebody tells me about them. Also, very few know grammar because most graduated from government schools. You might even find some errors today in this very article! (If so, I’d appreciate it immensely if you tell me about them.)
The Majority of What You Write Should Communicate
Can we agree that if your job is to communicate that you should communicate as effectively as you can?
Slang, sloppy abbreviations, grammar errors you do not care enough about to correct… All make it more difficult for you to achieve the very goal you seek: to communicate.
You Mock “Grammar Nazis” To Justify Being Lazy (or Stupid) – It Doesn’t Work
These lazy writers quite often mock Grammar Nazis.
Let me be clear:
Definition: A “Grammar Nazi” is somebody who sees all the mistakes you ignore because you are lazy. You must use a disparaging term to belittle people who take care to communicate far better than you ever try to do.
Mocking those who communicate well is your way to justify being lazy. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Or you’re stupid. You are lazy or stupid. If I thought you were stupid, I’d never look at what you (try to) write. So I assume you’re lazy and want to “look cool” and belittle those who know how to communicate. This somehow makes you feel better. You then can continue being lazy and so you can continue to make it difficult for others to understand the points you’re trying to make in emails, blogs, and podcasts. But street thugs would be impressed by you, so you’re impressing them. Maybe they will buy all your products!
Note: If you’re stupid, that’s a far better excuse than the excuse that you communicate badly for “style.”
Tip: If your job is to communicate but you choose a “personal style” that’s anti-communication, your personal style is the worst style you could have found in the universe.
Most shocking again are those people who sell things, often high-quality products, but justify they’re horrid writing by telling these lies to themselves:
- “My audience understands me and only cares about content, not my words…” or
- “My approach is different.”
You want to develop a unique “personal style” and “approach” that’s “different,” so you adopt the same, lazy, ignorant-looking approach hundreds of thousands of street gang members use. Because you want to be unique.
So What Do We Do?
I’m not saying we should correct people’s grammar and spelling all the time. I am saying that a consistent laziness/sloppiness/ignorance approach toward basic grammar when your only job is to communicate to others is folly.
You’re lazy or you’re stupid. (The only third option might be that you’re a Public School English teacher.) You either don’t know how to write, spell, and compose sentences or you’re too lazy to do those things. Why should we read or purchase from someone who is lazy or stupid?
If you’re stupid, it’s easy to change. If you’re lazy, it’s almost impossible to move a sitting elephant.
