A friend who often talks about spiritual things recently responded to my mention of an Old Testament book with, “I really haven’t read or studied the Old Testament much, except in a class I once had.”
Let me clarify, he talks a lot about spiritual matters, often mentions God, and even Jesus.
Ignoring History (and Revelation)
My friend might not recall from his one class where he read “some of the Old Testament,” but the first Book in there is Genesis. (I’m using hyperbole; I’m sure he knows that.)
2,000 years of the universe’s history appear in that one book alone.
The universe has existed for a little more than 6,000 years and certainly less than 10,000 years. Many of the scientists at the Institute for Creation Research in Dallas say the universe is far closer to 6,000 years than 10,000. Who am I to argue with them? They’re hardcore, analysis-driven scientists in every sense of the word.
Note: It wouldn’t surprise me if my friend believes the government school system, my guess also his church, and the atheists who all say the universe is millions and millions of years old. I prefer science and I prefer the Creator’s account Who made the universe over atheists’ account. But ignoring the Old Testament makes one extremely weak in God’s plan for us.
Not being familiar with Genesis means you opt to ignore 1/3rd of human and earthly history.
The rest of the Old Testament covers the span of the second 2,000 years of human’s and the universe’s existence. Ignoring the Old Testament, therefore, means willfully ignoring 2/3rds of human history and two thirds of God’s revealed Word to us.
Jesus and the Old Testament
Jesus didn’t ignore the Old Testament.
He only quoted Old Testament Scripture. Jesus never quoted New Testament Scripture.
I want to be more like Him.
That is why I want to know what He wrote about those 4,000 years. (All scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, should be published in red letters. They’re all His Words.)
Weakness in the Body
The reason so many women run churches these days is because men won’t do the job God designed them to do. Men don’t lead in churches, men don’t lead in families, and men don’t lead in government.
Men are weak.
Weak, emasculated males in today’s churches often fall for the social justice ills that brought down the Soviet Union and every other civilization where collectivism’s been attempted. These weak, emasculated possible Christians have no foundation.
That foundation requires knowing 2/3rds of God’s history, history that God put in a Book for us to read.
Ignore 2/3rds of what God wants you to know and you will be at least 2/3rds less effective as a Christian. It’s more likely, you’ll be a negative asset as a Christian as you go through life harming the witness of those who know God’s Word better than you want to know God’s Word.
My prescription to cure you: Read God’s Word for ten years, over and over, from Genesis to Revelation, before you open your mouth to say one more word about God. Because you don’t know God. Shut up and stop guessing about God until you know Him.
The good news is: you can know Him. He wants you to. He even gave you a manual.
