You could almost put someone through Harvard for the annual cost of keeping a person in prison. I am unsure who, however, would come out more vile – the Harvard graduate or the Con College inmate.
The bottom line is, prison and jails are bad ideas. They are horrible punishments and not deterrents.
If jails worked, we would need fewer of them, not more of them. And every city with a jail demands more money for more jail space. It’s a jobs program. And it guarantees its own continued expansion as inmates teach others their crafts.
