To the extent that we add our own philosophies and desires to Scripture that are not in Scripture – at the very least, to that extent we will be wrong and almost always be disappointed and far worse off than before.
Christopher Fisher posted a brilliant article today on one common myth that permeates American Christians today. That is the mythology that God has one mate for every person.
Chris writes, “Christians are often embroiled with fatalism. I have heard entire sermons about how God has one special person planned for every single boy and girl. In addition to ruining the live of countless Christians…“
[Emphasis mine-gp]
It’s not even God’s job to find you a spouse! Where does His Word say that? If, for example, you pray that God will bring a husband to your unmarried daughter, to the extent that you pray that, she will remain unmarried in most cases. God tells man to find a wife. Your resources are better served finding as many eligible Christian men to meet your daughter and the ones seeking a wife have a greater chance at making that wife her.
A Good Sign That Your Theology is Mythology
I have a general rule of thumb that I apply to most theology: If the vast number of Christians today believe it, the odds are great that it’s mythology and not theology.
Such as:
- All sins are equal
- Hate the sin and love the sinner
- God has a mate for everybody
I urge you to read Chris’s post here: God Does Not Have Someone For You.
If, after reading this, you still believe God has one special person for every person, all I ask is that you prove this through Scripture. I’m open to reproof and correction.
